Auto Close Idle helps you monitor and safely close unattended applications automatically after a certain idle time, or at any time by a click of a button remotely. It's designed to work with any Client/Server database or accounting application and monitor its use. It allows you to view who haven't been using the software for a long time and close it when necessary, either after an idle time limit, or whenever you want. This ultimately allows you to save on concurrent users licenses and making sure that everyone can log in when needed, not to mention that it reduces the chances of unauthorized access.

Telling users to close the application when they don't need it doesn't work in practice. Employees can leave their desks for variety of reasons. A simple trip to make coffee can be interrupted by a cell phone call, or a meeting with a client, or can be given tasks or field trips by a supervisor when they are away from their desks. The last thing in their minds is to waste a trip to their desks to close an application...

Auto Close Idle closes the monitored application by clicking on the close button at the top right of the application's main window, and respond to any confirmation dialog when prompted. Auto Close Idle will not end, terminate, or "kill" the process; an activity which leads to data loss or corruption. If there are any validation dialogs present, you can use Auto Close Idle built-in remote control functionality to see the user's screen and interact with the application remotely; so you can respond to any validation dialogs and close the application safely.

Since users can run a CPU intensive operation in the database application that could take a long time and leave their desk, it may not be wise to close the application while it's busy doing something. In NT clients, Auto Close Idle waits for the CPU to be idle for 30 seconds after the CPU intensive operation before attempting to close the application when it's in "Auto Close" mode, when the administrator tries to close the application manually, a warning message appears. This is a safety feature so whatever operation the user has started, is not cancelled.

Auto Close Idle shows you the list of users and their corresponding idle times. When you sort by the idle time, the most idle user would appear at the top of the list, once that user start using the database or accounting software, that user will drop to the bottom of the list. This makes it easy to see who is the most idle user quickly and decide what action to take. However, you can configure it to close the application after a preset idle time automatically. This can be done per user.

Users who cannot log in; can right-click on an icon on the task bar and notify the administrator that they cannot log in, this allows the administrator to check who is not using the software and close idle applications as necessary. However, in most cases ACI would have freed enough sessions that anybody can login without problems. The administrator can also enable other users to close the most unused copy of the application directly. In this case, when enabled, a user can right click the icon on the system tray and selects "Close most idle user". This would close the most unused application across the network automatically without needing to disturb the administrator's intervention. This relieves the administrator to other duties while insuring that users can login whenever they need it.
